Greenland has a reputation of being covered by ice and surrounded by icebergs and sea ice with Polar Bears walking the streets of the capital Nuuk. Apart from the fact, that the interior of Greenland is covered by ice, this is all fiction. Offshore the southwest coast of Greenland, in the southern Davis Strait and the northeastern Labrador Sea, icebergs are infrequent, sea ice is not present at all, and offshore operations are possible year-round. In the Northwest Greenland region sea ice forms annually in the Baffin Bay area and progresses southwards to the the northern Davis Strait area. This sea ice retreats during the summer and leaves room for operational windows until late autumn where sea ice formation starts anew.
