The material used to manufacture the cutters surface on Polycrystalline Diamond Compact - PDC bits is called Polycrystalline Diamond - PCD. This synthetic material is 90-95% pure diamond and is manufactured into compacts set into the body of the drilling bit. Hence the name of these bits.
