The material used to manufacture the cutting surface on Polycrystalline Diamond Compact - PDC bits is called Polycrystalline Diamond - PCD. This synthetic material is 90-95% pure diamond and is manufactured into compacts which are set into the body of the bit. Hence the name of these bits.
